Garmin Astro 320 Software Improvements

Some old Garmin products such as Garmin Astro 320 are using the 2-axis compass to determine pet’s location. The bad thing about 2 axis compass is that you need to hold a handheld unit flat otherwise it will not give you an accurate location of your pet. Those who are familiar with Garmin Astro 320 already knows that the words “hold flat” will appear on their handheld screen when they trying to locate their dog while they holding the unit at the wrong angle.

3-axis compass

You will not face this issue in Garmin Astro 320 because it has new and improved 3-axis compass. You can hold handheld at any angle or position no matter you are holding straight up or down it will always try to give you the accurate direction of your dog.

Garmin Astro 320 Calibration Process

As you know that in order to calibrate the old Astro 220 you need to held the unit flat and turned it in a circle 3 or 4 times until he told you to stop but in new and improved Astro 320 Garmin completely change the way of calibration.

You have to move Garmin Astro 320 in 3 different directions in order to complete the calibration process. When you start the calibration process you will see a guide on-screen which ask you to slowly move the unit in the specific direction shown.

Just follow steps 1,2 and 3 in the same way and it will notify you that you have successfully calibrated your unit. If something goes wrong during the process Astro 320 will notify you that you have to start the calibration process again because something goes wrong in the previous one.

New Dog Setup Menu

As you know that after adding the dog in old Garmin 220 device instead of changing the dog set in the same window Garmin 220 force the user to go into the Dog Info screen to change the settings which is very time-consuming good news is that in Garmin’s new update you can change dog’s name, update time and all the settings in the same window.

Always remember that for better tracking and performance calibrate Astro 320 T5 before the usage.

Hardware and Physical Changes in Astro 320 Handheld

The Garmin Astro 320 body is similar to Garmin 62ST because 320 has the almost same size and shape. The fully rubberized outer coating makes easy and comfortable while holding the handheld.

Good thing i found in Garmin Astro 320 is that they change the location of the power button and place it on the right side of handheld which is much easier to use. The old Astro 220 has a power button between the radio frequency and GPS antenna, which is hard to reach the position.

As we know that changing the antenna in Astro 220 was the big problem and if we change it in regular basis rubber around the antenna would tear up but you will not face this issue anymore on new and improved Astro 320.

They keep the keyboard design same in both 320 and 220 models but the keyboard is slightly bigger and they raised the buttons a little bit higher so you will clearly feel comfortable while typing on your handheld.

New & Better Garmin Astro 320 Map Feature

Garmin completely change the map in his new Garmin Astro 320 device and they called him as Worldwide DEM base map. Worldwide DEM basemap features more roads, more shading and more waterways. It doesn’t mean that it’s a topographic map because it’s not.

Show or Hide Dog Name, Status and Distance

In older Garmin 220 unit you cannot hide the dog names from your handheld screen but 320 allows you to hide in just 1 tap. Dog status feature allow you to hide your status of your dog from the screen and replace it with the triangle that is pointed in the direction that the dog is moving.

Garmin Astro 320 allow you to measure the distance of your dog while you looking at the map. You can see your dog, dog trail and dog distance from the handheld and unfortunately old 220 doesn’t support all the describe features.
